Kathleen O'Neal Gear
Kathleen O'Neal Gear was born on October 29, 1954, in Tulare, California. She grew up on a small cotton farm near Pixley, California. Her parents, Harold and Wanda O'Neal, in addition to running a farm, were both writers. Her mother was a newspaper journalist and her father penned over fifty western short stories. She graduated from Tulare Union High School in 1972, and went on to receive her Bachelor's Degree from California State University in Bakersfield, and her Master's Degree, summa cum laude, from California State University in Chico. She also spent several months studying at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel. She was working on her Ph.D. in American Indian History when she moved to Wyoming in 1980 to serve as the state historian, and later, archaeologist, for the U.S. Department of the Interior. The federal government awarded her two "Special Achievement Awards" for outstanding management of America's cultural resources.
She met her husband, W. Michael Gear, at an archaeological conference in Laramie, Wyoming, in l980. They were married on October 1, 1982.
She has authored or co-authored over one hundred non-fiction publications in the fields of archaeology, history, publishing, and bison management, as well as twenty-five novels. Her books have been translated into twenty-three languages. In 2005, PEOPLE OF THE RAVEN, co-authored with W. Michael Gear, won the Western Writers of America Spur Award for the "Best Novel of the West."
In addition to writing books and conducting archaeological research, she and her husband raise North American buffalo on their ranch near Thermopolis, Wyoming. Red Canyon Ranch received the 2004 national "Producer of the Year" award from the National Bison Association, as well as the "Classic Producer's Award," from the Dakota Territory Buffalo Association, and the "Producer of the Year" award from the Wisconsin Bison Producer's Association.
